What Is Covered By Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance can be very confusing when compared to traditional medical insurance. Traditional insurance plans are set up to cover the loss and insurer bears the most risk, while dental insurance covers specific treatments.

Maybe you've heard that dental insurance is expensive and coverage can be limited. That's because it varies from plan to plan, but most dental insurance plans cover:

  • At least 2 preventive care visits (like cleanings or exams) in full

  • Restorative treatments such as dental crowns and periodontal gum therapy at least partially

  • Orthodontics and periodontics (treatment of gums) at least partially

The most common types of dental care that people need are preventive, basic, and major procedures. Most dental insurances cover preventive treatments 100%, basic treatments 80%, and major treatments at least 50%.

Services Covered By Dental Insurance

Services Not Covered By Dental Insurance

Generally, procedures that are considered to be cosmetic are not covered by dental insurance. A dental procedure is considered to be cosmetic if:

  • There is no medical reason for the procedure to be performed

  • The procedure is performed solely for improving the aesthetics of the patient’s mouth or face

  • There is no damage or infection to the underlying tooth or gum.

Most dental insurance plans usually do not cover the following dental procedures:

If the procedures are performed for medical reasons then the cost may be partially covered by dental insurance. Each dental insurance plan is different and it is best to confirm for yourself which treatments are covered by your dental insurance. Fortunately, even if these procedures are not covered by insurance they can be financed with CareCredit.

Commonly Used Dental Insurance Terms

It is very common to be confused by insurance terms, so here are a few dental insurance terms explained simply to clear any doubts:

  • Deductible: A deductible is the fixed sum of money you need to pay before your insurance plan pays for your treatment.

  • Annual Maximum: The total amount of money covered by your insurance plan is the annual maximum.

  • Co-Insurance: Co-insurance refers to the cost you have to bear after the deductible is paid. For example: if you have a 70/30 plan, then your insurer pays 70% of the cost while you pay 30% of the cost.

  • Co-payment: Co-payment refers to the fixed sum that needs to be paid by you towards your medical treatment while the rest is paid by your insurer. It is similar to co-insurance. However, co-payment applies even if the deductible has not been met, while co-insurance is paid only after the deductible has been met.
